Art Guernica

Guernica is the painting describing the bombing in Guernica, created by the most well-known and least understood artist of the twentieth century. The Pablo Picasso agreed to paint the centerpiece for the Spanish Pavilion of the 1937 World's Fair. During Spanish Civil War, the fascism was wide spread all over the world. On April 26, 1937, the Germans bombed the Spanish town Guernica for just an experiment. The city was destroyed and the citizens were massacred. Picasso expressed this chaotic situation in Guernica at that time to protest about fascism. Moreover, he attempted to bring the world’s attention to this historical event. Therefore, Guernica shows the tragedy of war and the suffering of innocent civilians.
The painting Guernica is in black and white. The background is black and the animals and humans are expressed with white. The overall black background makes somber mood and it aim to express pain and chaos. In that way, the pains of victims are stressed. In addition, the overall painting is the scene in a room. On the left side of the painting, there is a door open. In the chaos, No one does not see or heads to the open door. In that way, the painting gives people touching impression. The Picasso used abstract form to express brutality of the event. For example, woman in the painting Guernica in burning house abstracted like screaming. On the right side, there is a woman who seems like lost her baby because she is screaming with embracing the dead baby. Under the dead horse, apparently audiences can see dismembered human body. He looks like a soldier and his hand on a wounded arm grasping a broken sword. Ironically, A flower grows from the sword. I think the flower means the new hope and future will grow even in Guernica someday. Next, a light bulb and the lights describe the explosion of bombs in the Guernica.
