This research paper seeks to investigate the link between flow experience and self-regulation in decision-making processes in media usage, and attempts to explicate socio-cognitive media consumption mechanisms..

The authors wanted to test the significant relationships the following factors have on each other, as well as how they affect video game usage, video game habit strength and video game consumption. The factors are: self-reactive outcome expectations, deficient self-regulation, habit strength and internet usage. They wanted to do so by testing the various hypotheses:

H1: Video game habit strength will be positively related to video game usage.
H2: Deficient self-regulation of video game consumption will be positively related to video game usage.
H3: Self-reactive outcome expectations will be positively related to video game usage.
H4: Deficient self-regulation of video game consumption will be positively related to video game habit strength.
H5: Self-reactive outcome expectations will be positively related to video game habit strength.
H6: Self-reactive outcome expectations will be positively related to deficient self-regulation of video game consumption.

The authors also wanted to test the relationship between flow experience and video game habit strength, deficient self-regulation of video game consumption, self-reactive outcome expectations as well as video game usage. They wanted to do so by testing the various hypotheses:

H7: Flow experience will be positively related to video game habit strength.
H8: Flow experience will be positively related to deficient self-regulation of video game consumption.
H9: Flow experience will be positively related to self-reactive outcome expectations.
H10: Flow experience will be positively related to video game usage.
