Komagatamaru is a Japanese steamship, and it sailed from Hongkong to Shanghai,China: Yokohama,Japan to Vancouver,British Columbia,Canada.In 1914, they carried over 300 Indians,however,when they arrived in Canada, because asian were not allowed to stay in Canada, those indians were not allowed to land in Canada, and the ship was anchored on the ocean for two months and was forced to return to India.
In November of 1908, the Canadian government introduced legislation to prohibit further South Asian arrival.It was called the Continuous Journey Act:prospective immigrants would not be allowed to land in Canada unless they traveled on a continuous journey,which was impossible at that time for people from the Indian subcontinent.In my opinion, this is very unfair to the Indians,Indians have no damage for Canada,but the federal government forced them to leave from Canada.
The reason that why Komagatamaru incident was seen as an important event is that about 20 people was killed by guns and others were detained in Canada, and never come back to Indian.According to White Canada Forever by W.Peter Ward, although the federal government settled many laws for China and Japanese, nothing can stop indians immigrants to come to Canada.This event is very different from others.this is not only gather some money or gain some power,this event is a blasting fuse of the breaking relationship between Canada and India."Furthermore,by the end of the century,in these regions migration had become a common solution for economic problems.The overwhelming majority of emigrants were male."(p80).All the males come to Canada to be immigrants by themselves,"they commonly represented a landowning family group,one which could spare a laboured and which ofter mortgaged its holdings to send the emigrant abroad.He,in retire,sent his savings back to his family, which used the income to advance the family's interests,typically through purchasing land or improving housing,"(p80)More male...
