Introduction
Organisations are made of people all working towards achieving the objectives of the organisation. It is a mammoth task in organising these workers so as to be productive whilst portraying the ethos, adhering to policies and maintaining good working relationships with colleagues. Every organisation from small business to corporations have a functional area that manages this enormous task which can be referred to as People Management
Harrods has been in existence for more than 160 years and employs over 4000 permanent staff and with additional agency and concession employees totalling about 3500. Harrods is global and has a reputation and prestige entwined in its brand values i.e. British, Luxury, Service, Innovation and Sensation
Personnel management and Human Resources Management are conflicting terms although they are both concerned with people management but yet still there are many differences that exist between the two. One main difference between the two terms is the nature of the relationship between employees and management. In Personnel Management in a small retail organisation the relationship between management and employees is on contractual basis “where one hires and the others perform” This relationship is said to be individualistic ie the individual employee interest is more than group interest.
