This assignment should be based on the controversial issues addressed in the "Multiple Viewpoints" section of your text (497-824). You will choose an issue, other than the one you discussed in Assignment #1 and take a stand or make a claim about that issue. You can find the issue you are interested in by browsing through this section of the text and reading a few essays. Abortion is one issue you may want to stay away from because nothing new can be said about this emotional subject. These essays will be a jumping off point to help you generate ideas. You must use them as sources (at least one) in your paper in addition to any other sources you may use. This paper should be no more than three pages (800 to 1100 words approximately) in length and requires that you do research and find other claims and arguments with which to support this claim. You will be evaluated not only on your ability to eloquently present your case, but also on your ability to evaluate and analyze the logic of your sources. All documented sources, in other words, are not created equally. For your second progress evaluation, you will outline the specifics of your position, the major pros and cons associated with this issue, and the warrants and premises underlying your logic.
Please double space the content and use standard formatting in a 12 point Times New Roman font. Checking the evaluation criteria will give you a good idea of the kind of elements I am looking for in this assignment. It gives you an indication of what is expected in this assignment.
Brainstorming Exercise
1. Browse through the topics listed in the Multiple Viewpoints section (except abortion of course) beginning on page 481 of your text. Which one appeals to you? Once you have chosen your topic, use the invention technique of your choice to list all of your thoughts and opinions about the topic.
2. Read through the essays. Which most closely approximates your own opinion? Which is most antagonistic to your opinion?...
