Attention Deficit Disorder Attention Deficit Disorder or also known as ADD has been called in different forms and terms but synonymously ADD is called ADHD ( Attention Hyperactivity Disorder) but speaking in medical terms they differentiate in many ways. “According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition, DSM-III both types involve difficulty with attention”. In one hand ADHD can be described as a disorder with attention span, impulsive manners and hyperactivity while ADD is the disorder with the same symptoms but without hyperactivity. During the 1980's this disease was determined to be more complex than previously thought but it wasn't until 1994 when the DMS-IV named it attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. In 2003 a study named “The Worldwide Prevalence of AD/HD” showed that one out twenty children in United States have this disorder. Attention Deficit Disorder affects three to five percent of all children. Studies have shown that two to three times boys are affected than girls. It can be represented that at least one children in every classroom needs help. There are different theories about what causes Attention Deficit Disorder but there is not a precise cause. Many studies have shown that relatives with ADD have a higher risk or chance to be hereditary. “Research has demonstrated that AD/HD has a very strong neurobiological basis. Although precise causes have not yet been identified, there is little question that heredity makes the largest contribution to the expression of the disorder in the population.” (CHADD)
In order to make a precise diagnostic the first step is to make a parents interview. They are the most vital source of information. They have to be very seriously and not blaming each other.
