DEADLY UNNA (by Phillip Gwynne) CHAPTER SUMMARIES CHAPTERS 1 AND 2 In these chapters we’re introduced to the main character Gary Black (Blacky). He’s 14 years old and lives in the sea side town of Port. He plays Aussie Rules for the local team and they have made the Grand Final- a huge event for the town as nothing exciting ever usually happens there. In a strange twist of events Gary must play ‘first ruck’ in place of one of team’s best players – ######## (######## can’t play anymore because he’s found to be 18). Playing this position scares Gary as he’ll have to mark the biggest and best player on the opposition- Thumper. Suddenly everyone in the town seems to care about Gary. Gary fears being classed as a ‘gutless wonder’ by the town and constantly worries about the game- he doesn’t believe in himself. It also explains how his former wife left him with his kids and how he likes to use plenty of ‘Brylcream’ in his hair. He is very interested in Blacky (Gary) now he is playing ‘first ruck’ and organises to take him down to the oval to give him some practice and tips on rucking. CHAPTER 4 Gary gets a lift with Arks in his ‘Arks-mobile’ (his car) which smells strongly of Brylcream. Arks explains how he used to get nervous before games and he has never won a grand final out of 8 finals. He practices with Gary but it doesn’t go well and he fears he has disappointed Arks. Gary starts to doubt himself – he talks about how he knows all the theory behind kicking the...
