Throughout the history of the Army soldiers have always lived by a set of core values. Today those values exist in the form of the Army’s Seven Core Values. These values guide a soldier’s life and their career path. If you fail to live according to these values your career as a soldier will not last long. The Army’s seven values that soldiers recite today are Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. These form the acronym LDRSHIP, and I do not believe this is a coincidence. The Army needed to choose a way that soldiers could readily identify with in order to form a positive lifestyle change that is consistent with the Army’s reputation of having good order and discipline. These values are ingrained into a soldier mind beginning at Basic Training/ Advanced Individual Training and continuing with each unit that they get assigned to. Acceptance of these values is part of the rite of passage that a soldier undergoes as part of their transformation from civilian to soldier. That transformation rapidly changes a soldier’s life because they are no longer the selfish individual who thinks merely of what is best for them, but a selfless soldier constantly thinking of their buddies needs over those of their own. Today’s Army is a reflection of not only the lessons the Army has learned over the years, but a reflection of the soldiers that have chosen to join its ranks. Today the Army is committed to turning out the best possible soldiers that have signed up from all walks of life. These citizens regardless of what component of the army they choose to join, whether it be Active, Reserve, or National Guard, all receive the same training and are armed with these Values and therefore are considered reliable and trustworthy when and if the time comes that they must work together on the field of battle.
