Baba Shiv gives his speech “Sometimes it's Good to Give up the Driver's Seat” (Shiv, 2012). Shiv is a Neuroeconomist who has won awards such as the, William O’Dell prize, citation of excellence, and multiple people have also recognized him for his success. He has researched all different types of questions involving decisions, which have caused him to win numerous awards and be recognized in a positive light by society. Shiv’s claim was that sometimes you should not focus too much into the decision being made; you should step back and allows others to make the decision for you. He supports his claim by telling us about the cancerous battle that him and his wife had to deal with when they found out she was suffering from breast cancer. As Shiv was talking about his wife having cancer I realized there were many shortcomings that negated his claim. Through the articles of involving patients in medical decisions there is two interesting articles that proved shiv’s theory to be misleading. The first article is “Patient participation in decision- making”. The second article is “Patients’ preference for involvement in medical decision-making: A narrative review”. These articles both support the new claim which is that it is more beneficial for patients to be in the drivers seat throughout there decision making process.
One article that supports the new claim of it being more beneficial for patients to be in the drivers seat while making decisions is, “Patient participation in decision- making”. This article talks about the studies that were done for and against patient participation. This article says “ conclude that (a) patients want to be informed of treatment alternatives, (b) they, in general, want to be involved in treatment decisions when more then one treatment alternative exists”.
