Chemistry
States of Matter
Matter: Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. The states of matter are solids, liquids, gases and plasma
Diffusion: The movement of particles from a place where there is a high concentration of solutes or gases, to a place where there is a lower concentration of them. Diffusion shows evidence that matter is made up of particles
Osmosis: A special type of diffusion that involves the net movement of water molecules, through a semi-permeable membrane, from a place w here there is a high concentration of water molecules to a place where there is a lower concentration of water molecules. Osmosis shows evidence that water is made up of particles
eg. An egg stripped of its shell is placed in a beaker of water, there is a high concentration of water molecules in the water, thus it would move through the semi-permeable membrane (the outer layer of the egg) into the egg which has a lower concentration of water molecules until molecules are evenly distributed
OR
- A special type of diffusion that involves the net movement of water molecules, through a semi-permeable membrane, from a place where there is a low concentration of solute particles (dilute solution) to a place where there is a higher concentration of solute particles (concentrated solution)
eg. An egg stripped of its shell is placed in a beaker of salt and water solution, there is a low concentration of solution in the egg (meaning it has more water than solute) and a higher concentration of solution in the water and salt, thus the water would move from the egg through a semi-permeable membrane (the outer layer of the egg) to the water and salt solution, until it is evenly distributed
Brownian Motion: The erratic random movement of microscopic particles in a fluid, as a result of continuous bombardment from molecules of the surrounding medium
