Barbie was first introduced in 1959, at the American International Toy Fair, in New York. She was created by Ruth and Elliot Handler, who are the co-founders of Mattel toys. She made her debut as a teenage model and was dressed in a black and white striped swimsuit. She was the first doll in America with an adult body.
The purpose of this report is to prove that Barbie is an inappropriate role model for young children. The way that Mattel projects Barbie is an unattainable image for young and old to look up to. In this report we will focus on four main topics: Barbie in the media, Mattel’s advertising, Barbie controversy and Barbie and eating disorders.

From the beginning of this report both team members have had a shared opinion towards Barbie. Both agree that there are some positive aspects of Barbie but feel that misrepresents herself by portraying an unachievable physic and lifestyle that most people could only dream of.

The doll, which is formally known as Barbie Millicent Roberts, was created to be eleven and a half inches tall and weighing eleven ounces. She made her debut as a teenage model and was dressed in a black and white striped swimsuit. She was the first doll in America with an adult body.
