On any given night in cities and towns across America, one doesn't have to look hard to find a baseball or softball game-taking place. Whether it be one of many professional baseball games on television or a softball game at the community field, "America's pastime" is undoubtedly enjoyed by fans on the field and off. People of all ages and abilities take part in these two sports. From little league games for young children to the adult office softball team, baseball and softball are played by millions of people. Among the many sports across the world, baseball and softball can be likened to sisters in the sports family. There are many commonalities that exist between these two sports. More often than not, people see the two sports as one, but in reality, the two sports are different in many ways. This is illustrated in the designated positions on the field, the participants, the spirit of each team, skill, rules, and the equipment used in each of the sports. Although baseball and softball have many similarities, the underlying differences in each of these sports create two very different games.
Although baseball and softball are exceedingly different, the two sports are not without their similarities. Firstly both sports play on the iconic diamond shaped field with three bases and home plate. This makes it easy for the average person to assume that the two sports are exactly the same. Also both sports have same basic goal of getting a batter to hit the ball make it all the way around the bases to get to home plate to score. Each team is given three chances per inning to achieve this goal. Finally, and most importantly, both sports are indicative of the U.S. pasttime, and hence are immensely popular. People of all skill levels from novice to professional athlete can play of these sports, making them popular not only in the U.S., but around the world.
