The Battle of Britain
From August to September in 1940 a battle took place in Britain that was a big part in World War II. The Nazis had just defeated France and now they turned their attention to Britain. Great Britain was the last sole remaining enemy of the Nazis, so Hitler ordered his generals to invade Britain.
Britain was prepared for the attack, like they almost knew it was coming. Nothing was too bad until the night of September 7th when the Nazis started bombing British cities. This was one of the first times that Germany had actually bombed civilians, and they actually killed a lot of innocent people. After that night the battle become a lot more violent. Actually this battle was the first battle to be fought mostly in the air. The fighter planes used were Spitfire and Hurricane. Nazis continued to bomb British cities and London was one of the worst to get it. The Nazis kept trying to attack by air and the British defense held strong and retaliated. The British actually had a very big edge over the Germans because they were using radar for the first time ever, and that really helped them. The Germans ended up giving up hope of defeating Great Britain and the Battle of Britain started to fade away in October. It actually wasn’t really that hard to tell that the Germans definitely needed to leave because they had lost 2,375 planes while only 800 British planes were lost. This was the first defeat of Hitler’s military forces and was a major turning point in the war. This defeat really changed the perspective of the Nazis because they pretty much thought that they were unstoppable, and then Britain totally shut them down. Now Germans started to question about if they really could do the things that they wanted to do, and some people began to even question Hitler and if he really was what all the Germans thought he was.
