The importance of staying in touch with your leaders is of high importance for several reasons. Firstly and most importantly so that they have accountability of you. Second if there are any changes in the schedule they can update their soldiers as need for what pertains to them. Third they are not forced in to a bind should questions arise as to where an individual is and what they are doing. This also ties into a word know as battle rhythm.
What is a battle rhythm and how does this apply in keeping your chain of command informed, you might ask. By definition according to the United States Department of Defense dictionary, A Battle Rhythm is a deliberate daily cycle of command, staff, and unit activities intended to synchronize the current and future operations. So then what does that all mean? Simple put a battle rhythm provides an anchor points around which leaders, non-commissioned officers, soldiers and individuals can plan their daily activities. In other words a battle rhythm is a schedule of events, some of which are repeatable events that occur at set points in time over and over again. For example Physical training occurs every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday unless otherwise informed of new or changes in events. This idea of a developed and maintained scheduled is not new in the military. Sun Tzu wrote of the need for consistency and constancy to promote discipline in the sixth century. A battle rhythm promotes discipline through giving structure from command down to the soldiers, and everyone knows what to expect and when to expect the results of events in the battle rhythm. Leaders can focus on upcoming events knowing that they do not have to micro manage the soldiers underneath them, and soldiers can accomplish the mission knowing what it is, what is expected, and when it is due.
