The main sources of modern law in the United States are the Constitutions. These consist of the Constitution of the United States of America and state constitutions. The Constitution of the United States is the supreme law of the land (Cheeseman, 2013, p. 11). For example the Constitution has been used to help change civil rights through statements like all men are created equal. The increasing world economy makes treaties more important when dealing with other countries. Treaties are usually made between the U.S and other countries to try to open favorable trade. An example would be when a hostile nation gets a new leader we may make a treaty with them to open trade. The next influence on modern law is codified law or commonly called statutes and ordinances. The federal statutes are what regulate foreign and interstate commerce (Cheeseman, 2013). An example is the Militia Act of 1862 which allowed African-Americans to serve as war laborers and solders. State statutes are like federal statutes but they are on a state level and they may let smaller local governments enact ordinances. An example of a state statute would be in North Carolina there is one that says failing to kill a mad dog in your control is a misdemeanor and you will pay a 50 dollar fine and all damages that the dog causes. An example of a local ordinance is the town I live next to has a noise ordinance within town limits. This is important because the smaller towns and communities know what may be needed in their specific area. Executive orders are an order issued by a member of the executive branch of government (Cheeseman, 2013). For example Obama passed an executive order on classified national security information. Many times these are used in times of war or when we are they are trying to prevent something they feel is a threat.
