When we think of the American West we think of cowboys and the stereotypical “wild wild west.” However, Patricia Limerick shows a different light on the west and how it really was. The most obvious example of conquest within the west is that between the White Anglo-Americans and the Native Americans. She talks about many topics that people do not think to discuss because Hollywod gave this persona through comedy films. She gives examples on the dominant racial issues that were present. Although race was a huge issue, religion played a big role too.
The author does state an explicit thesis. She originally wrote this book to show that these topics are recent in origin and bore little relation to the distant frontier west. She warns us to have connection with the past and present which the racial issues in the west shapes events in our own time.
She talks about slavery with black/white relations and how it is associated with the west.

She states, “My point is that the Historian is obligated to understand how people saw their own times, but not obligated to adopt their terminology and point of view.” This is a great quote because she can say whatever she wants in her book about her thoughts and views butBriana Gapp
