I decided to analyze Beethoven’s Symphony number 5 movement 1. The piece is considered as one of the most popular and best-known compositions in classical music and it is also one of the most frequently played symphonies. The melody of this piece seemed to be conjunct. The moves of this piece were by steps which meant that the sounds of the notes were close together. It gave a structured and continuous feeling to the audiences. The melody was performed in both legato and staccato style, which often appeared in classical music. However, in overall, the piece was mainly played in a staccato style, which the notes were separated and detached and it gave a lively feeling. The texture of Symphony number 5 was monophonic. It meant that it only consisted a single melody line with no accompaniment throughout the piece. The harmony of the piece was consonant, which the sounds were pleasing to the ear and the music would be very amusing to listen. The listeners would even want to listen to it again and again because Beethoven composed the piece in a repetitive way in order to let the audience at the concerts easily remember it. The key of the piece was C minor, which is commonly regarded as a special key for Beethoven. Some outside information of Symphony number 5 is that it was rightly considered a natural continuation of Symphony number 3 Eroica because both pieces approach the same themes. The formal structure of the piece is strophic which meant that it consisted the same music for each stanza of the text. This structure allowed the melody to repeat the theme of the music so that there would be a part that was more memorable for listeners and would be really easy to remember.
