Westboro Baptist Church, also known as WBC, was established in 1955 by Fred Phelps. Fred Phelps was born on November 13, 1929 in Meridian, Mississippi. He graduated Meridian high school and then attended law school at Washburn University in Topeka, Ks.
He is the pastor of Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas.The community of his “church” consists of his family members.He has 13 children, the majority of whom are also lawyers.
Westboro Baptist Church adhere to the teachings of the bible, preach against all forms of sin, and insist that the sovereignty of God and the doctrines of grace be taught and expounded publicly to all men.
WBC engages in sidewalk protests throughout the country and has traveled to different countries such as Jordan and Iraq, but due to budgets they mostly stay within the Kansas area. To spread their messages online theyhave their own website, www.godhatesfags.com. They also spread their ideasthrough faxes, press releases, and radio.
Theyprotest against homosexuality, at military funerals, and carry around signs stating, “Thank God for IEDS”, “God Hates Fags”, and other degrading signs. Their “church” has held 44,309 pickets and there are more to come.
When asked, “Why do you have these signs thanking God for things that humans think are bad?” Their reply was, “First, it is the duty of every human to be thankful to God for everything He does. He is the Creator. All His acts are, by definition, perfect and just. … The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. (Psalm 19:9). All things flow from and happen by Him. It is the duty of every human to bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ (2 Co 10:5). Therefore, we are to be thankful for everything He does.” (“GodHatesFags”)
