Better Than - John Butler

Better Than - John Butler

Hello class, the song I am going to talk to you about today is Better Than by John Butler Trio. I like this song because it has some meaningful messages in it.

The type of music I like varies depending on what mood I am in but I mostly like bands like Kings of Leon and Jack Johnson.

The song is about having unrealistic expectations of life. If your expectations are unrealistic, then when you fail to achieve them, you will not be happy. So the song is saying set yourself realistic expectations and appreciate what you have around you so you will be happier.

The first verse focuses on appreciating what you have now and not dwelling on the past and what you might have done differently. Learn from your mistakes, don’t dwell on them.

The lyrics “So why, oh why, Do I look to the other side, The grass is greener but just as hard to mow" ' are clever because the things will be better on the other side but there’ll also be other problems or things that mean it isn’t absolutely perfect.

I can relate to this song in some ways because often I want things in life that I really can’t expect to have and when they don’t occur I am disappointed. Having heard this song I now have a better appreciation of all the good things I have.

However, I don’t intend to take these lyrics to literally as I also believe it is good to have realistic ambitions and a desire to improve yourself.

If people lived by these lyrics the world would be a much happier place.
