According to the book Immigration: Debating the Issues edited by Nicholas Capaldi in the chapter Bilingual Education: Fact or Fiction by Richard V. Lopez, there are many skewed conceptions of bilingual education that have consequently drawn a lot of unpleasant comments and opinions. Lopez addresses many of these opinions and disproves a lot of the critics against the idea. Statements such as “Studies prove that bilingual education doesn’t work,” “Many ‘bilingual’ programs use the student’s native language almost exclusively in the first few years. Students aren’t learning English,” are things that were proven false by Lopez research. In all of his findings, he came to the conclusion that regardless of the various opinions of this topic, bilingual education is a crucial key in getting our immigrants acclimated to America.
Signpost: Bilingual education will allow our immigrants a fair shot at education.
Need:

There are many families who left their home countries to come to America in hopes to make a better life for themselves, and if they show the dedication and persistence to be an American citizen, the right of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness should not be denied! Education and understanding English is critical to the grinding process of making a good living in this country, and bilingual education is a strong first step to the goals of our new Americans.
Signpost: The benefits of bilingual education show promise to propelling students of all ethnicities.
