Bilingual, the Language of the Ghetto

Bilingual, the Language of the Ghetto

This article is about former house speaker Newt Gingrich, who openly admitted to thinking that being bilingual is the language of the ghetto and believes that the United States should stop handing out things in multiple languages.   Mr. Gingrich also believes that English is the language of the country and that people should have to know the language at all times, since when people migrate here from other countries, you have to know American history.

This article is based on the pros and cons of bilingual education in the United States.   In this article they discuss the issues of bringing children up to, so called, speed on learning in the English language.   This article also discusses that many people feel that bilingual students should be immersed in the English language to help them to learn.   This also discusses that many people, do not feel that English-as-a-second-language classes should not be counted toward academic grading.

In this piece, we see that many teachers believe that learning a second language can help you in the future, to grow and rise up the ladder to higher paying positions, and greater responsibilities.   It states here that many other countries are promoting foreign language in the elementary schools. The world is full of different languages and cultures, why shouldn’t the children be used to this when the time comes.
The last article I read was about something called dual-language programs. This program is where children who are dominant in English and children who are dominant in Spanish learn both languages in the same classroom. The last article I read was “The Controversy Behind the English-only Movement”   which talked more about exhausted funds spent on bilingual classes in the US educational system.
