Binge Drinking ruined my life. I went to college with the goal of obtaining a college degree, and making new friends in the process. However, alcohol lured me down a self destructive path. It (what) started out as personal experimentation and a mandatory rite of passage into college, but it quickly spiraled out of control. I skipped most of my classes, blew off schoolwork, I blew off everything to booze it up. I drank to be the life of the party, to be accepted, to be one of the gang. I drank just to drink to kill the time. In the end I drank my way out of college. By the end of my speech, you will learn about college binge drinking, and have a clear understanding of why students binge drink and what consequences this form of risky behavior could bring.

I am not alone with my struggle with alcohol, many college students across the United States report engaging in binge drinking. The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines binge drinking as the heavy consumption of alcoholic beverages in a short period of time, with the primary intention of getting drunk. The bottom line is that anytime someone sets out to get drunk, then drinks large amounts of alcohol in a short period of time they are binge drinking. Binge drinking is very prevelant among adolescents and young adults across the US despite having a legal drinking age of 21. Binge drinking among America’s youth has become an epidemic problem, especially on college campuses. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, the population of people who binge drink peaks at 18-24 or during college. In fact binge drinking in college is more common than among people of the same age who do not attend college. Furthemore it has been reported by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, that four in every five college students drinks and about half of these engage in binge drinking.
