Chapter 2 Vocabulary
1. Matter - anything that occupies space and has mass.\par
2. Element - a substance that cannot be broken down to other substances by ordinary chemical means.\par
3. Trace elements - an element that is essential for life but required in extremely minute amounts.\par
4. Compound - a substance consisting of two or more different elements combined in a fixed ratio.\par
5. Atom - smallest unit of matter that still retains the properties of an element.\par
6. Proton - a subatomic particle with a single positive electrical charge.\par
7. Electron - a subatomic particle with a single negative electrical charge.\par
8. Neutron - a subatomic particle with no electrical charge.\par
9. Nucleus - an atom's central core, containing protons and neutrons.\par
10. Atomic number - the number of protons in each atom of a particular element.\par
11. Mass number - sum of the protons and neutrons in its nucleus.\par
12. Atomic mass - the sum of its protons and neutrons and equal to its mass number.\par
13. Isotopes -A variant form of an atom and same number of protons but different number of neutrons.\par
14. Radioactive isotope - an isotope whose nucleus decays spontaneously, giving off particles and energy.\par
15. Electron shells - certain energy levels that electrons only occur.\par
16. chemical bonds - atoms staying close together held by attractions.\par
17. Ionic Bond - a chemical bond resulting from the attraction between oppositely charged ions.\par
18. Salt - a compound resulting from the formation of ionic bonds; also called an ionic compound.\par
19. Molecule - two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds.\par
20. Double bond - a type of covalent bond in which two atoms share two pairs of electrons; symbolized by a pair of lines between the bonded atoms.\par
21. Electronegativity - an atom's attraction for shared electrons.\par
