Black Vs. African American

My Name is Lance Archie I am 18 years old and I am from Tampa Florida my major is Business Administration. I am a young black male that goes to BCU that will graduate in 2017. I would prefer to be called an African-American not black because I think the word black is a very derogatory word and the term African-American properly fits. We live in a world where majority of every opportunity you get is based off of the color of your skin. I don't like black it denotes something else to me than who I am. I am a brilliant young black man who is not adding to the statistics of dropping out of high school and selling drugs on street corner. Many of my peers back believe the only way to make it in life is to rap or play ball and I’m trying to show them you can go to college and be successful in life. Its good to show that hard work pays off because I was doing really well in high school which lead me to earn a lot of scholarships in high school. I'm glad I never got into the drug scene in high school because I've seen it really mess up peoples lives in high school like I can already tell people who will never get to amount to anything in life because they got addicted to drugs in high school. That’s why its hard to grow up as a black man in this country and that’s why I like being called African-American and not black. We have been called Negroes, Colored, Afro-Americans. And those are the nice names. We have also been called niggers, jigaboos, darkies and even worse. That’s why I like being called African-American and not black. Because being called black is just as same as being called a nigger in my opinion because nobody in the world is the color black I mean of course there are really dark people but they are still not any black people just like there...
