Our individual identity is determined by what others think of us What is identity? How important is it to us? and What makes our identity? are the common questions asked by people everyday, one of the most important features that take a part of creating our identity is basic community standards, in another words, other peoples opinions on how we should look like and behave. There is several reasons why we act according to society’s expectations, social standards exist because it is the best way for most of us to function together in harmony, think about what would happen everyone in the community acted in the way they feel right without considering others, conflicts will definitely occur because of the different views. Another reason is that most humans in general have the instinct or desire to belong to individuals or groups and in order to belong, some characteristics of individual and groups have to be similar. Forming an identity consists of three main factors; the first factor is our sense of individuality. Our sense of individuality is developed ever since we were born, from the point where we eat our first bite of food we realise that we need food in order to keep ourselves alive or when we desire certain things we unconsciously understand that our needs and interests are a part of who were are. As time goes on and people grow up, the sense of individuality come in contact with other factors such as sense of others. Our sense of others is developed through our interaction with others where positive or negative opinions towards different types of people may arise, and the reactions towards the two sides may differ, some might want to get to know the people we have positive views about and might neglect the negative people, our sense of belonging is somewhat related to our sense of belonging as we desire to belong with the people we feel good about.
