A Midsummer Night’s Dream Review By: Matt Kelly The play was a massive success in my opinion because of the intriguing acting, the massive sets and of course the huge turn out of GNS participants and actors. Firstly, I would like to say that Puck’s performance was brilliant and was as well acted as it could have been in this sort of show, which is quite contrary to the mediocre review that his performance got in the Times Colonist. The writer seemed to think that the young actor in his gymnastic approach to the role instead of the acting. I thought that the character Puck should have had a livelier role instead of focusing on the lines. However, the actor did take the aspect of his lines in to consideration more dutifully when acting his next performance (so I’m told). The acting was also magnificent in the character of Bottom who had a spectacular booming voice that captured the character like I have never seen before. He was so loud that the people in the first few rows of the audience were frightened beyond belief when the first line of Bottom filled the room. His role as Bottom was just as delightfully presented as his alias of an ass as he pushed his Hollywood worthy performance in a slightly different direction. The sets, for me, were the highlight of the evening because of their astonishing massiveness and as well as theirmaneuverability and appearance. The first scene started out witha descent set, which was fully functional for what it was used for, but it did lack some luster. Then the forest scene was introduced and is was amazing; the entire thing was painted painstakingly to the last detail, and the nooks and crannies for the set were perfectly positioned to make (most predominantly Puck’s performance) things a little bit more professional.
