Brain Damage in Athletics
The world of sports and athletics have evolved in terms or technology and regulations to meet an evolved society of men. Unfortunately with this evolution in the field of athletics there has been a rise various categories of injuries particularly those to the Brain. Brain damage, today has become a leading category of injuries and as a result relevant studies have taken place to investigate this problem. Studies have pointed that these injuries have not only due to physical injuries in the sports but also drug abuse and alcoholism amongst other factors.
The term ‘brain injury’ is often misunderstood .A traumatic brain injury (TBI), according to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, is defined as a blow or jolt to the head, or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain. TBI can result when the head suddenly and violently hits an object, or when an object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate or severe, depending on the extent of damage to the brain. Mild cases may result in a brief change in mental state or consciousness, while severe cases may result in extended periods of unconsciousness, coma or even death.
Now from that piece of expert information can we now see the problematic situation that arises in various field of sport when athletes suffer blows to the head? However if I were the only major cause of this epidemic I would be less than truthful with you. Brain trauma is also linked to drug and alcohol abuse.
In the world today,the availability of illegal drugs are far greater than50 years ago.With this availability came drug testing systems in sport to prevent its usage within various fields sport.Many renowned sporting organisations such as NFL,FIFA and NHL find that many athletes try to smuggle drugs into their system.
