President M. Nixon, Resignation Speech
My reaction to President Richard M. Nixon’s Resignation speech is that je is either very sorry or regretful at what he has done. Or maybe this is just a speech to cover himself up and regrets nothing, feeling as if he has done nothing wrong. My first reaction is that he felt very bad for what he did and the mistake he had made. The way he talks about the five and a half years of his service was some of the best of his life, he wanted nothing more than what was best for this country. He makes this very clear throughout his speech. He goes on to say that he has never been a quitter and he says, “To leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to ever instinct in my body”. You can tell in his speech that he loved being president and serving this country, and he represents what an American is about. He goes on to talk about the nest president, the Vice President Ford. He says “In turning over direction of the government to Vice President Ford, I know, as I told the Nation when I nominated him for office 10 months ago, that the leadership of America will be in good hands”. When he says this he helps himself out with a lot of Americans, showing them that giving this up is very hard but that he has confidence in his predecessor.
Another part of me thinks that he feels as if he has done nothing wrong, he thinks he should still have a place in office. This speech that he has made is just a speech to cover up his reputation that he has pretty much destroyed. All of the things about what is best for the country and he is leaving the country in good hands, I could just be a cover up for his rep also. Richard M. Nixon’s presidency and speech will go down in history as one of the most interesting ever, the Water gate Scandal is one of the biggest scandals in history for a president.
