Brave New World Essay
Ever since people have existed, they have been ultimately trying to improve the way they live their lives. In the modern era, people view science as a tool to improve the world through the means of technology. Scientists are trying to find answers and inventions to help create a close to perfect, if not, a perfect world that will me maintained by scientific technology. Aldous Huxley mainly used Brave New World to criticize modern scientific trends by hinting that science is being used improperly, pointing out dangers in the use of science, and expressing his feelings about the modern scientific issues.
The major point Huxley was trying to point out through his novel is that science and technology can be used for a purpose other than creating a utopia and controlling human happiness directly. Some examples of these purposes can include finding ways to help the poor live better lives and improving the way students are educated. Using science to help the poor will benefit societies, increasing the amount of happiness. Though, science should not be used to control the lives of the poor. This would only lead to further problems and disagreements. A quote from Brave New World presents the way lower people were treated and affected in the scientific controlled utopia. “The surrogate goes round slower; therefore passes through the lung at longer intervals; therefore gives the embryo less oxygen. Nothing like oxygen-shortage for keeping an embryo below par(Huxley, 14).” The lower caste people were given less oxygen so they would accept their role as the inferior ones in the society. The other alternative in using technology can be to help the upbringing of children. An example of this can be better educational tools. As a result, the children of today will be able to lead better lives in the future. Though, science should not be controlling the upbringing of children.
