What might have been done differently before Sky’s entry announcement: Firstly, BSB should have made means to stop Sky from entering the market. Secondly, BSB knew a little about the type of person Murdoch was and his ambitions, so BSB should have made an analysis of their potential competitors including Sky because they had been in the satellite business for a few years. Thirdly, If BSB had bought the film-rights on time, they could have saved a lot of money. Fourthly, BSB should not have scheduled to make a public comparison of its technology, but should have first given the public the existing standard PAL, and the replace it later with D-MAC. Following the announcement: What should BSB do in 1990? In particular, what share of a possible merger pie would you hold out for, as BSB? (Olga) First, BSB could possibly sell already constructed platform and following Sky’s example start renting a third-party satellite, refuse from the license and create an independent business and therefore have money for a more promotion and penetration. Secondly, BSB should have changed to PAL standard and thus eliminate customer’s confusion and boost technology: MAC hardware for the receivers didn’t allow develop satellite, the number of channels stayed the same small, compared to that of Sky’s Astra. Since BSB was becoming something of a disaster, losing vast amounts of money every day and although Sky was in a better position, the merger would not be such a bad idea.
