Group 1: Native Americans
1) Describe your assumptions, beliefs, and perceptions about members of this group. I can say I do not know much about Native Americans, my assumptions and beliefs about this group is that they are very brave and mostly live off of land. They are a group of people who have learned from their people from the past. They do not use technology or electricity. They worship more than one god.
2) When you think about working professionally with members of this group, are there traits, characteristics, or other issues about the group that you would be curious about, concerned about, or intimidated by? Why would understanding diversity issues be important to you as a human services worker? I personally think this would be kind of a hard group to work with, but I will do my best to give them the help they need. With a group like this that have different beliefs giving them the services they might need will be hard because of their different beliefs. I feel that this group will disagree with a lot of services that I might have to offer. It would be important to understand this group so that I will not offend them in any kind of way and so that I can help them understand the services that will be provided to them.
3) How could advanced knowledge of the group address concerns and assumptions? I feel that advanced knowledge of this group can address concerns and assumptions by learning their true beliefs and how they really survive in today’s society. It would help you as a human services worker to handle clients like them...
