September 5, 1980 MADD was formed with the mission to aid victims and their families due to the crime of individuals who had been driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and to spread awareness of the problem of drinking and drugged driving (Mothers against drunk driving, 2014). Over the past 34 years MADD’s mission has changed over time to help better meet the social problems in society from drug and alcohol abuse to underage drinking. Today MADD is one of the nation’s largest nonprofit organizations working to protect families from drunk driving and underage drinking (Mothers against drunk driving, 2014). MADD did not start out as strong as it is today. When forming the organization the mothers who banded together had no money and no influence, but knew they had to make a difference in society to save other children and implement policies to protect them from other drunk drivers (Mothers against drunk driving, 2014).
According to MADD chief executive officer Chuck Hurley, “Before the 1980s, drinking and driving was how people got home. It was normal behavior,” (Mothers against drunk driving, 2014). Society did not see drunk driving as an issue even with the number of accidents and deaths caused by drunk drivers every year (Mothers against drunk driving, 2014). Politicians were discouraged by the lack of support and bills not passing in favor of regulations on drinking and driving (Mothers against drunk driving, 2014). However, when MADD formed their discouragement faded.
