BSHS 373 Week 2 Team B’s Analysis of Financial Statements According to the financial statement from Valley of the Sun United Way there was a notable decrease in the contributions they received in 2009 compared with the year before . One major external factor for the decrease in contributions would be the economy. In 2009 the economy took a drastic downturn that most people were not ready to face. Many organizations saw this in a lack of funding and decreased contributions like that with Valley Sun. A positive aspect of Valley Sun was the increase from 2008 into 2009 of board member contributions. I would contribute this increase to the internal and external factors. The external because other sources of funding and contributions did not yield what they did in the past because of the bad economy. The internal that Valley Sun relies a great deal on local businesses in the community, “…to serve on the board and in other key positions within Valley Sun and the foundation. Pledges from Board members totaled approximately $660,000 in 2009 and $378,000 in 2008,”( Earnst & Young, 2009). Valley Sun United Way must have prepared for the economic hardship. They had extra planning and left more allowance for uncollected contributions than they did for 2008. This is shows good risk management in preparing by estimating a larger amount of uncollected contributions
