We are writing the year 2014 and some smart people are thinking about sending normal human beings to Mars. It does of course sound a bit like a Gene Roddenberry story, believe me I couldn´t believe it when I first heard of it either. With the conditions of 95 percent carbon dioxide in its atmosphere and an average temperature of negative 81 degrees Mars is definitely not the best planet to live on. And lets not forget the surface gravity that is 38 percent of what we experience on Earth. But billionaire and CEO of SPACEX Elon Musk is working together with his company on a plan for normal human life on Mars, it probably won´t be possible in the next 5 years, but it could become easier in 5 to 10 years. At the moment space travel is still too expensive, but with the continued work on the already ongoing programs it could become less expensive in the future. Elon Musk says you would need to send at least a million people to Mars to build a self-sustaining station. That would mean sending one hundred people per flight, which makes 10,000 flights. And then there is of course the problem of Mars only being in earths orbit every two years. So there would be a huge amount of people being sent at once or you would need to break the mission into little pieces and wait for two years for the next sendoff. And there is no life already existing on Mars, humanity would be the one bringing it to Mars. You see there is still a lot of planning to do before a mission to Mars could seriously work out. But there are brave and very intelligent people working on all the problems that still need to be solved. I personally would love to travel to Mars or just travel through space. A sci-fi nerd, that I am, would do a lot for a chance like that.
