Can There Be Life After Death

Life after death is incoherent? Discuss. Life after death and the body-self relationship speaks to some of our deepest questions: What happens when we die? Does some part of us live on? Life after death covers the concept of heaven and hell and the resurrection the rebirth and then how you live on even when you’re dead. In this essay I will look at different beliefs and see if life after death is incoherent. Hindus believe in reincarnation. This means that they believe that at the end of this life their soul will be reborn in another form, there is continuity from one life to the other until the person lives a different life in new body. Buddhists believe that the life of a person is connected through the law of karma to another life. The process is linked and the individuality that a person feels is related to the process and context and their new life is determined by the acts of their last life. A problem with this is that no one remembers anything from the previous life which undermines the argument for the soul from memory however some people may say they can remember but how can you be so sure. Hicks also puts forward that memory is important evidence for a continuity of the same person if memory is wiped away at rebirth how can you be sure it’s the same person. In conclusion Life after death can neither be proved nor disproved. This is because one would have to undergo physical death in order to prove or disprove it there is no actual direct evidence against an afterlife only argument refuting the specific examples of evidence for life after death as not being sufficient proof.
