Career Day

On March 30,2008 I woke up with my hopes high, and my nerves rambling. I had no idea what was in store for me at my first career day. When I arrived at school, the first thing I saw was the sign-in table for the guests coming in that morning to speak to us. I was so excited, and I could barely sit still during Mrs. Majeske’s ongoing instructions. Once she finally dismissed us to the gymnasium where half of the speakers were, I was just about to faint. There are so many choices in life, with some many different paths to choose from. Some of them seem very intriguing, and others, well, not so much….

The second professional I went and talked to, his name plate said “Brandon Hall, Account Executive” and I thought, “Oh, well that seems interesting. Why not check it out?” Throughout the whole interview all I could think of was how I never, ever wanted to be an “Account Executive”. It seemed so pointless, and utterly mind-numbing! A normal work day for him consists of checking his e-mail, calling people, trying to sell ads and writing proposals. That doesn’t seem too electrifying to me. So I asked him what are some of his favorite things about his job, to maybe see if I was mistaking, and he said flexible hours and discounts on his client’s products. I was through then; nothing seemed to be screaming “NIKKI THIS IS ACTUALLY FUN!” So I decided to wrap things up, and look ahead for something that might be worth doing.

By the time it was my groups turn to move to the cafeteria, I was more than ready. Rushing into the cafeteria, I come across Mrs. Deanne Lewis, a Substance Abuse Officer. She was wearing the biggest smile under the sun, so I couldn’t help but be interested in what she had to say, even if I had no desire to be a “Substance Abuse Officer.” After we got to talking, I learned that first impressions aren’t always the right one! Being a Substance Abuse Officer isn’t nearly as boring as it sounds! A customary day consists of teaching different children...
