Characters Allie his deceased brother, and Phoebe his younger sister. In Holden’s eyes everyone else is phony. Holden constantly uses the word phony to identify everything in the world which he rejects. In the novel, Holden rejects his roommate Stradlater, as he does not value the memories so dear to Holden as much. For example, In the novel Holden writes a English paper for Stradlater about his brother Allie’s baseball glove. When Stradlater later reads the paper, he is unimpressed as he never had as strong and close emotional relationship with Allie to really appreciate the piece. As well as Stradlater, Holden finds his most trusted teacher, Mr. Antolini, to be a phony when he attempts to touch Him. In conclusion, Holden is left with some good and yet bad memories leaving him confused with emotions. C: At the end of the novel, readers may recognize a significant growth in maturity in Holden. Although at first Holden is quick to criticize those around him as phony like Stradlater and Ackley, his more recent encounters with others in New York prove that he has become more tolerant and less judgmental. This is noticeable after the ordeal with Mr. Antolini, where Holden is determined not to make any conclusions about his teacher. With this growth, Holden’s fantasy of being a catcher in the rye becomes more present. Despite his lack of ability and fear of becoming an adult, he found his role in keeping the innocence of other children protected. This is shown when he tries to scratch out the vandalism at Phoebe’s elementary school. However, at the end of the novel, Holden finally comes to the conclusion that he cannot protect all kids from the adult world. Holden finally decides that he has to let kids fall. He was afraid she would fall off the horse."The thing with kids is, if they want to grab at the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not say anything.
