“I'm pregnant.” The text message says. Michael knows exactly who sent it. He has been going out with his girlfriend for over two years now. Two years – certainly not enough time Michael thought to have a child - and certainly not during his junior year in high school. Michael's girlfriend now needed him for support as she was also a junior at the same high school. Michael later decided, along with his girlfriend, to drop out of high school to take care of the child. Little did Michael and his girlfriend know that dropping out of high school could certainly be a pivotal decision point in one's life, sometimes altering one's future permanently. Among all of the multiple consequences associated with dropping out of high school and not receiving a high school diploma or G.E.D., very few of the consequences are beneficial or positive. Ultimately, the effects of dropping out of high school can effect one's available job choices, social standing, and in the most rare of cases - success.
The American job market has noticeably declined over the past few years. One can certainly observe this if he or she simply turns on the television and watches the news. Unless one is a Beverly Hills housewife, having a job as a source of income is clearly important. The need to pay for even the most basic amenities is critical in the world today. Employers are regularly laying off employees, making the current job market a giant melee for the unemployed. When businesses and their employers are reluctant to hire in the current job market, their process to hire employees relies on extreme scrutiny, choosing the applicants that are best qualified for the position. If a high school dropout is searching for even a simple job at McDonald’s, he or she may find it difficult to get hired. The hiring employer might hold his or her application and resume’ next to another applicant who graduated high school and has the same job experience....
