What caused the slavery in America? The answer to this question is simple. Americans somehow decided to use a black man as working hand. They do not consider African Americans as a human being and for the most of Americans it was acceptable to use slaves for their welfare. The biggest injustice in slavery was the issue for slaves having no rights. I would take this issue as secondary because when you have slavery everything else may suffer from unfair, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” Martin Luther King, Jr.
Now, from the book “Twelve years a slave” if anyone thinks that any of the character embraced slavery is totally wrong. There were certain characters, John Tibeats or James Burch who find their material gain in slavery. Did they embrace slavery? No, they just had no enough understanding what slavery was. They would consider themselves as businessmen. Not only these two executioners, but even some slaves, according to the book, were satisfied of their position and tried to be the best servants for their master. Did they also embrace slavery? No, they also had no enough understanding and knowledge to stand up for their rights. This was the reality of United States. People lived in darkness and today when we finally opened wide our eyes we see the shameful lists of the history of the slavery in the United States (1619-1865).
Unlike Tibeats and Burch, William Ford is a kind man. He treats slaves as a human. That’s why Ford received trust and respect from Solomon and other slaves. His kindness is the matter of character more than the matter of understanding what slavery is. In other words, Ford as the most of Americans in that particular period, considered slavery as a normal fact. In this situation Ford is closer with Burch and Tibeats. They all endorse slavery.
