Unoccupied Play
To me this type of play means to observe the play, but not engage in play. The textbook states that unoccupied play is when a child is not engaged in play.

This occurs from birth to about three years old. This is when children are moving, but have no purpose. This is the beginning of play.

This type of play sets the stage for future play. Infants my not be engaging right away, however they are still learning.

In the classroom this type of behavior would be when a child is looking at their hands, looking at their feet, cooing at themselves. A child who is just standing around, while other children are playing. A child who may cling to a teacher, or follow a teacher around.
Onlooker Play
To me this means that a child watches children play, and may occasional ask questions.
The textbook states this type of play is when children watches others in play but does not enter the activity. May ask questions or make suggestions, but does not enter the play.

This occurs most often through the toddler years. This type of play can also occur at any other age. This is where children are learning language, and how they can relate to other children. Children will usually ask questions, but not engage in play.

This type of play is important because it sets the stage for children to learn language, and how they can relate to other children.
It is an opportunity for young children to learn and mentally practice interacting with others. With adult guidance, they'll benefit from this thoughtful time.
