In the last 50 years there have been great changes to the way families are structured and the ways they work. Definitions of family have changed and widely broadened over the years as well. Changes have occurred due to several reasons. It may be due to influence of media, sources of available income and state of economy, the expectations of individuals, and cultural differences that arise between families and also socially acceptable trends. Main changes have occurred in the roles of individuals in the family. Increasing development in cities may have led to changes in size of families. Family sizes have also changed due to different styles and forms of living people have adopted. These forms include couples, marriages/civil unions, single-parent families and single households (FamiliesCommission, 2008).

As advances in technology and economy are made, expectations of individuals change depending on current state of the family. Children have also become more independent earlier and tend to find their own sources of income. Thus, when they become independent at a younger age, it results in them moving out to find their fortune and forming single households. Society has come to accept females working and playing more dominant roles bringing income to the family. Women are making greater contributions to income of the family and are also often primary bread winners for the family. Women now have more freedom of choice in their family size more choice of having a career, even the choice to have a family without being married. Society has also contributed to the factors affecting women’s choice in bringing income to the family. The available job roles for women have greatly increased in the last 50 years. It has increased greatly due to the fact that industries have moved to services rather than production of goods. Chinese had mainly relied on farming in the past.
