The character I choose to analysis is from “Good Country People” the character name is Hulga better known Joy. The story introduces us to well-educated a woman who was thirty-two years old. The age of ten, Joy lost one of her legs in a hunting accident, and from that point on became a depressed realist. At the age of twenty one, Joy moved out of the house, went to college, and legally changed her name to Hulga .Hulga most likely changes her name to spite her mother, because Joy is such a beautiful name and Hulga is such an ugly one. This woman has an artificial leg which was shot off in a hunting accident when she was ten. This exemplifies the attitude of Hulga, the protagonist in the story. Hulga is a woman who has been dealt a tough hand in life. Joy arrived at Hulga first purely on the basis of its ugly sound and then the full genius of its fitness had struck her. Joy had made it plain that if it had not been for this heart condition, she would be far from these red hills and good country people. Hulga looked at young men as if she could smell their stupidity. When Joy takes her artificial limb off, she feels entirely dependent on Manly Pointer. The character made unjust choices in the story by lying to the bible salesman’s about her age and then trusting someone she barely knows, the decision was unwise by giving someone her leg without actually thinking. She should have known that the bible salesman was a liar once he pulls out the suite case and it did not have bible in it. Also she was confused from the start because she is an achiest, by not believe in God why would you decided to let a bible salesman’s into your house.
The character motivation of the character to subdues bible salesman Manly Pointer
