Cheating with Today's Technology

The out cry for colleges and universities to curb students from using modern day technology to cheat from other students and professors has made several colleges and universities change their Honor codes and buy new technologies to prevent cheating from happening. When students use this form of cheating it does nothing but hurt them and cause an injustice to other students, who are trying to get an education from being accessible to their families in an emergency. Several instructors have banned the use of cell phone/PDA and other communication devices from their classes as well as exams. This is only one way to curb the cheating. Several others are Colleges and Universities invest in software subscriptions and new age technology as well as building secure testing centers to make cheating harder. There are several websites that check for plagiarism and this new software called Securexam have made it easier for professor to catch the cheaters. With securexam, students sign on to an exam on identical, school issued laptops using a special password they receive upon arrival, and find themselves in an exam program that blocks access to any other use, from e-mail to EBAY.COM. (Louise Brown, 2004) I found this to be a well used program by several universities and colleges. Then there is the University of Central Florida answer to cheating by building a new super secure testing center, in which they have their Business Students take, their exams on cheat-resident computers. (Kim Clark, 2008) Colleges and universities that can’t afford to build new testing centers are going with the Honor Code system that has work for years. Even though it’s up to the student to honor this, studies show that most students do so. While these are only a few answers to curb the cheating, studies show that colleges and universities are still far behind on the cheaters who use technology to cheat.
