Children’s Growth under the Influence of Domestic Violence
Throughout history power has always been a problem for humanity, because in general the people who have the power use this power only for themselves without thinking others. Especially using physical power for bad purposes results in important problems. We can see the best example for this in the countries where patriarchal opinion is dominant. In these countries men can do whatever they want on women and they use physical power if women resist their wishes. They use physical power also on the child. And children are affected by this violence very much because childhood is very critical period. And children carry the effects of violence during all of their lives. The negative effects of domestic violence on the child can be grouped into two major categories: social problems and psychological problems.
First important effect of physical violence on the child is psychological problems. Violence causes stress on the children either they experience the violence or they witness to domestic violence in their family. They become anxious, unreasonable fear emerges on the children. (www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au, para.5). They are scared of even little jokes. In addition to stress domestic violence influences child’s self esteem in a negative way. Child becomes less self-confident because of the pressure in family. So child always needs someone else while doing something or in order to accomplish a task. For example child is responsible for a project. S/he thinks if s/he does something wrong, teacher will get angry and lower her/him. So this child cannot understand that faults are the best way to learn well. These bad feelings cause adult young’s misusing drugs and alcohol (Taylor, n.d. , para.8). It is impossible to be happy under domestic violence. So child finds the solution in drugs and alcohol which give momentary pleasure. Also parent’s apathy will cause child’s starting to use drugs....
