Within the Chinese medicine are herbs. And it all started back to 2000-5000 years ago. The history is still unclear. Many historians believe it started out from the primitive man, like the cave men and how they use plants. Others believe that herbal medicine started as a legend. Such as Shen nong who’s known as a legendary ruler of china and his name is define as a divine farmer.what he did was that He tasted hundreds of herbs to test their medical value. One of his known works is a pharmacopoeia which includes 365 herbs. 100 years later after Shen Nong came the yellow emperor that developed techniques to diagnose diseases. He also used herbs in treatment. There is a document the yellow emperor’s cannon on internal medicine that lays out those techniques. Over the years Chinese herbs lost its popularity in 1911 when the revolution occurred. And the Chinese republic was born. This revolution was led by western educated physician, Dr. Sun Yet-sen. What he wanted to do was to modernize china so he sought to eliminate traditional Chinese medicine but in 1949 when the communist came to power Chairman Mao encourage the use of Chinese medicine because there weren’t a lot of medical services at that time and Chinese medicine were also cheap and acceptable to the Chinese. By early to mid 1950 chinese herbs gaind popularity and it became a standard medicine in many hospitals. Also during that time 1966-76 was the Cultural Revolution and it basically was a power struggle within the communist party and that led to economical, political, and social chaos. A lot of practitioners and doctors were purged and killed and so Chinese herbal medicine kina died out. But happily in 1979 the national association for Chinese medicine was established and what it did was republished and edited many traditional text that contain remedies and techniques in herbal medicine.
