Chinese white dolphin is a kind of humpback dolphin. The dolphins are black when they were born. They change to grey and finally they turn into pink or white when they are older. The body length of an adult is from 2m to 3.5m and 1 m for infants. An adult weighs from 150 to 230 kg. Chinese white dolphins can live up to 40 years. They live in the waters of Southeast Asia.
There are 3 main causes for Chinese white dolphins to be endangered. Firstly, their living places are destroyed. Chinese white dolphins usually live near the coastal area, but there are a lot projects in Hong Kong are near the coast and they are destroying the habitat of Chinese white dolphins so they need to move to somewhere else where are not suitable for them to live. Secondly, the reduction of the food supply to them. Over-fishing is a large problem for Chinese white dolphins. The fishers catch their food. They will no long have enough food to eat and this problem disturb the dolphins a lot. Moreover, the water pollution is also cause for Chinese white dolphin to become endangered. The polluted water can killed the food of Chinese white dolphins and then they would not have enough food to eat. Also, when they eat polluted fish, they may be sick or died.
To protect Chinese white dolphins, we should reduce water pollution; the government should make environmental assessment before beginning different kinds of projects, in order to minimize the harm to dolphins. Also, the government should limit the speed of boats so that the boats won’t bump into the dolphins easily. Government should educate the public on environmental protection to protect the habitat of Chinese white dolphins.
Chinese white dolphins are adorable. However, we destroyed their living environment. We should take actions so that these cute animals won’t extinct or we will not see them when we are older.
