For the longest time we were taught that he was the discoverer of the Americas and was the one that brought Christianity and European civilization to the Americas. But as time went on and the more that the hand written letters and documents by Christopher Columbus were analyzed it makes you question his motives, methods and the impact of Spanish colonization of the indigenous people of the Americas.
Being that Christopher Columbus and the Enterprise of the Indies by Geoffrey Symcox and Blair Sullivan is both a primary source and a secondary source makes it a more creditable to use. There are actual letters within this reading that describes Christopher Columbus’s encounter with the indigenous population in the Americas. These readings are quite mind bottling because these letters that Christopher Columbus wrote go into great detail of not just his encounters of the indigenous people as a whole, like their culture but also his sexual encounters with the indigenous women. It seems that he is somewhat taking advantage of these women and actually raping them because in the letters he talks about the women fighting back. So it brings the reader to the conclusion that questions his true motives and methods because he is raping native women, which ultimately contradicts and questions his faith.
Christopher Columbus being a Christian and a god fearing man, you would assume that he is a good man and would not commit these sins. But he does so anyways and that is because he feels that of his skin color, white, he is dominant over all the others, especially the indigenous people of the Americas who of course have a darker skin color.
