"Mr. Kane was a man who got everything he wanted and then lost it. Maybe Rosebud was something he couldn't get, or something he lost. Anyway, it wouldn't have explained anything... I don't think any word can explain a man's life. No, I guess Rosebud is just a... piece in a jigsaw puzzle... a missing piece.” said Thompson at the end the movie when he was returning home empty handed. In my opinion Rosebud indeed was the missing piece in the jigsaw puzzle that was Kane’s life and it was love.
Kane wanted be loved throughout the movie but he never had the chance because he was making all kinds of mistakes to make sure that he was not. He made sure that the only reason people were affectionate toward him was because of his large sum of money. In my opinion he was just scared of allowing himself to feel emotions because he was afraid of the consequences. He made himself to be viewed as he was incapable of love so he could never be deeply hurt. If nobody could get to his heart nobody could hurt him, however he was doing this unintentionally and subconsciously because what he really and truly wanted was to love and to be loved. Everybody around him thought that he was arrogant, thoughtless, morally bankrupt and desperate for attention however they were wrong, I think nobody ever knew who Kane really was because they never knew what ROSEBUD meant to him meaning they never knew what love meant to him.
Even Susan became emotionally distant from Kane because he made many wrong deeds thinking he was doing well. By forcing Susan through a music path thinking that was what she wanted they started to grow apart. Kane did not take his time to understand her and Susan was at an emotionally unstable stage so she could not think clearly as well. After series of unwanted incidents Kane finally lost Susan. She thought Kane wanted to do everything as he wanted however she was wrong, Kane did everything that he did because he thought that was what Susan wanted. When...
