During the 1950’s, American was booming, more successful and was overall becoming a better place for people to live. with both horrific world wars being over and taking hundreds of thousands of lives, it was a great time for the country to grow and recuperate. There was an abundant amount of jobs, and the economy was flourishing because of consumerism and these jobs. With these great things though something was off. African Americans were treated like they were not citizens or even people. a movement needed to take place to turn this around and it was put into place. even though people in support of civil rights put themselves in danger, the SNCC, participants of the freedom summer, and the little rock nine accomplished the most during the civil rights movement.


Even though they were young and reckless putting themselves in danger like being attacked by white protesters of their cause, the group called SNCC made some of the most progress from their actions. SNCC stood for “Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee”. It was founded by a veteran civil rights leader named Ella Baker. it was composed of young people who were mostly of the college age. the young people were not happy with the pace of change, so they took auctions. in 1960 at a Woolworth’s lunch counter at Greensboro, NC, four African American college students sat down at a white only lunch counter inside the store and refused to leave. they were harassed and humiliated, but they still did not get out of their seats. within only a few weeks of this protest, 30 other southern cities experiences a variety of sit ins to integrate other facilities. these young people didn't have jobs, they had mortgage payments, responsibilities to family. they wanted a change in the ways of the society for the better lives of their family the the future generations.
