Classical Concert Review

I attended the SXU Southside Community Band and Symphony Orchestra’s “A Christmas Festival” on Saturday December 7th in the performance space here at SXU. I honestly did not think I would enjoy the concert and I was not looking forward to going. I got my boyfriend to come with me and he was probably less excited to go to the concert than I was. In the end though it was actually a very good concert and I did enjoy myself. I was in choir for five years and I gave it up my freshman year of high school, and this concert bought me back to my performances and it really hit home. I’m really happy that we got this assignment because it made a great date night and I really enjoyed listening to the orchestra’s music.
One of my favorite parts of the concert was when the Southside Community Band played The Night Before Christmas. During this song they had a woman come out and narrate the story to everyone and it made the song feel very personal to everyone. It made me feel as though I was sitting at home on Christmas Eve when I was younger and my grandma was reading me the story. I believe that the concert drew me in more because of the Christmas music they played and because of the familiarity of the songs just as Sleigh Ride had made the little boy dance because he had remembered hearing it before. The way they used the jingle bells to make the sound of a sleigh was very interesting and created a very Christmas like feeling to it.
I enjoyed the band that had the string instruments more then I enjoyed the music from the band with mostly brass instruments. The violins just added a lighter and prettier sound to the music and I felt that they made the music sound more complete. I also like the drums involved in the orchestra and the band...
